Nautical Term: Bearer

Definition of Bearer

A bearer refers specifically to the foundations of a structure, such as a bridge or a pier. When these foundations consist of vertical web plates themselves, they are distinctly called bearers.

For instance, during the construction of a new pier, the architects discovered that the previous pier’s foundations, which were composed of numerous vertical web plates, were actually the bearers of the old pier.
