Nautical Term: Belay

Definition of Belay

To secure a line or rope to a fixed point, such as a cleat or a pin. This action is typically used to make fast or secure a sail or a boat’s position. For instance, during a sailing race, a sailor might give the command Belay the mainsail! meaning to release the line securing the mainsail so that it can be adjusted or let out. Once the desired adjustment has been made, the sailor might then give the command Belay the mainsail! meaning to secure the mainsail to its fixed point by tightening the securing line.
