Definition of Block and tackle

(Block and Tackle). A set of pulleys, typically consisting of two or more blocks, which are roved up with an ample length of rope.

For instance, suppose a fisherman needs to pull a heavy catch out of the water. He can use a block and tackle system to multiply the force applied on the rope, making it easier for him to pull in his catch.
