Nautical Term: Boiler
Definition of Boiler
A boiler is defined as any closed vessel, container, or receptacle designed to generate steam by the internal or external application of heat. Boilers come in two primary classes: fire-tube and water-tube. In a fire-tube boiler, the hot gases from the fuel pass through tubes surrounded by water. The heat from the hot gases transfers to the water, raising its temperature and creating steam.
For instance, a steamship would typically use a large water-tube boiler to produce the steam required to power the vessel’s steam engines.
