Nautical Term: Straddle carrier
Definition of Straddle carrier
A straddle carrier is a specialized piece of equipment used in container terminals for transporting and moving containers. This type of equipment picks up containers using its legs, which straddle the container. Once the container is securely held by the straddle carrier, it is transported to the desired location within the container terminal.
For example, when a container ship arrives at a container terminal, the first step is to unload the containers from the ship using a crane. Once the containers are safely on the ground, a straddle carrier is used to transport the containers from the unloading area to the stacking area within the container terminal.
