Definition of Bort flange
A projecting flange or lip, situated above a port or opening on a vessel’s hull. The primary function of this feature is to prevent water drips from entering the port during inclement weather conditions or rough seas.
For instance, consider a ship’s fuel oil intake system. To prevent seawater from entering the fuel oil system during heavy rainfall or rough seas, the system is equipped with a bort flange.
