Nautical Term: Bos’n
Definition of Bos’n
Bos’n, originally derived from the term boatswain, is a designation given to a crew member who supervises and directs the deck crew’s work under the first mate’s oversight.
For instance, during a storm at sea, the first mate may delegate the responsibility of securing the ship’s rigging to the bos’n. The bos’n would then instruct and coordinate the deck crew to effectively and efficiently secure the ship’s rigging before the storm intensifies.
