Nautical Term: Bulkhead sluice

Definition of Bulkhead sluice

A bulkhead sluice refers to a specifically located opening in a bulkhead, which is situated just above the tank top connecting angle. This opening is then equipped with a valve, which can be remotely operated from the deck above.

For instance, during the loading process of a cargo ship, the bulkhead sluice comes in handy. By opening the valve from the deck above, water can be released from the tank through the bulkhead sluice. This process ensures that the cargo tank is correctly filled to the desired level.
