Nautical Term: Horn cleat

Definition of Horn cleat

A horn cleat is a specialized fitting, commonly featuring two curved, horn-like ends. Lines are secured to these cleats, providing a reliable method for securing boats to docks or mooring buoys.

For instance, during a day of sailing, a captain might want to secure his vessel to a mooring buoy. To do so, he would throw a line with a properly attached horn cleat to the buoy. Once the line was secured around the buoy, the captain would pull the remaining line back to his boat and attach it to the horn cleat on the boat. With the boat now securely moored to the buoy, the captain and his crew could relax and enjoy the rest of their day on the water.
