Nautical Term: Braze
Definition of Braze
Braze refers to the process of heating and joining metals using hard solder, also known as spelter. The metals being joined can be brass, bronze, or other alloys.
For instance, during the repair of an old brass water pump, the pump’s body and the repair sleeve were joined using the braze technique. The heating was done in a brass welding pot filled with borax flux. After the metals were heated until the solder melted and flowed between them, the pump was left to cool down naturally. The result was a solid, seamless joint that would withstand the pressure of the water pumping in and out of the repair.
