Nautical Term: Bulwark stay

Definition of Bulwark stay

A bulwark stay is a supporting brace that extends from the deck to a point near the top of the bulwark. Its primary function is to keep the bulwark rigid and prevent it from collapsing or giving way under the weight or force applied to it.

For example, during heavy weather at sea, the bulwarks may be subjected to strong winds and waves that could potentially damage the ship or even result in crew injuries or fatalities. In such situations, the bulwark stays would be crucial in maintaining the structural integrity of the bulwarks and thus protecting the ship and her crew.
