Definition of Bunker stays
Bunker stays are heavy ropes or chains that run from the deck to a point near the top of the bulwark. Their primary function is to secure and reinforce the bulwark against heavy seas and the impact of waves against the side of the ship.
For instance, during a storm at sea, the roiling waves may threaten to overwhelm the side of the ship. In such a situation, the crew would need to secure the bulwark as best they can to prevent any water from coming over the side. To do this, they would attach the bunker stays to the bulwark and the deck, securing them with heavy turnbuckles or other suitable means. Once the bunker stays were properly secured, the bulwark would be significantly more stable and able to withstand the impact of the waves against the side of the ship.
