Nautical Term: By the board

Definition of By the board

The expression ‘by the board’ refers to a boat that has capsized or is lying flat on the water. In other words, the boat is no longer floating by its side, but is in contact with the water only by its keel or bottom. For instance, during a storm at sea, a sailor might cry out, ‘She’s by the board!’ meaning that the ship, due to the violent waves and winds, has capsized or is lying flat on the water.
