Nautical Term: Waist

Definition of Waist

The waist of a sailing vessel refers to the part of the deck situated between the forecastle and quarterdeck. This area was historically used for officer quarters and storage.

For example: The brigantine, Sea Serpent, had just finished a successful voyage from the Caribbean to Europe. The captain, eager to distribute the spoils, assigned the waist area of the ship for the storage of precious cargo, including sugar, spices, and fine wines.
