Definition of Customhouse
A Customhouse is a specific government office where various duties and fees are paid, documents are filed, and other formalities are completed. This process primarily applies to foreign shipments, ensuring compliance with customs regulations.
For instance, when a merchant imports a large shipment of goods from a foreign country, they must first transport the cargo to the Customhouse. Once there, the merchant or their designated representative must present the necessary documents, such as the bill of lading, commercial invoices, and any other relevant paperwork. The Customs officials will then verify the accuracy of the documentation and assess any applicable duties or taxes. Once all formalities have been completed, the merchant will be granted permission to release the cargo from Customs custody and transport it to its final destination.
