Nautical Term: Deck button

Definition of Deck button

A circular, steel fitting mounted on a ship’s deck, specifically engineered to secure or direct cables during the assembly of barge tows.

For instance, while preparing to tow several barges, the crew connects the towline to the barge’s stern, and then attaches one end of the towing cable to the deck button on the tugboat, while the other end of the cable is attached to another deck button on the lead barge. The crew can then secure the cable to the deck buttons using clips or shackles, making the towing setup stable and ready for use.
