Chafe refers to the process by which the surface of a rope wears down as a result of rubbing against a solid object.
For example, when sailing, a rope may be used to secure a sail to the mast. If the sail flaps in the wind, it may cause the rope to chafe against the mast. Over time, this chafe can weaken the rope, making it more prone to breaking.
