Nautical Term: Doubling plates

Definition of Doubling plates

Doubling plates refer to additional plates, bars, or stiffeners added to sections of a ship where holes have been cut for various fittings, such as hawse pipes or machinery. These plates serve to strengthen the weakened areas, increasing the overall structural integrity of the ship. For instance, in the engine room, doubling plates may be added around the holes where engine shafts pass through, to help distribute the enormous forces generated by the engine, and prevent the hull from failing or buckling under the strain.
