Definition of DR
Dead Reckoning, also known as DR, is a navigational method used at sea or in other environments where the precise position is not readily available. DR calculation is based on the last known position, the estimated speed and the elapsed time. Here’s a brief example of how DR might be used in a single paragraph:
The sailor aboard the freighter checked the DR plotter and saw that the ship’s estimated position based on dead reckoning was about 10 nautical miles to the south of the actual position. The sailor quickly adjusted the DR calculations and plotted a new estimated position, which helped the freighter to stay on course and avoid any potential navigation hazards.
