Forty-foot equivalent unit (FEU)

Nautical Term: Forty-foot equivalent unit (FEU)

Definition of Forty-foot equivalent unit (FEU)

The term Forty-foot Equivalent Unit (FEU) refers to a unit of measurement that is equivalent to the volume of one standard forty-foot intermodal container. This measurement is often used in international freight forwarding and transportation industries to simplify the calculation and comparison of cargo volumes or container loads.

For instance, a shipping company might receive an order for transporting 300 TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units) of cargo from Asia to Europe. To ensure accurate planning and execution of the shipping logistics, the company can easily convert the total TEUs to equivalent FEUs by applying the conversion ratio: 1 FEU = 1.192 TEUs. So, the shipping company would calculate 300 TEUs 1.192 TEUs/FEU = 274.16 FEUs to effectively plan and execute the shipping of the requested cargo volume.
