Nautical Term: ECDIS
Definition of ECDIS
ECDIS, or Electronic Chart Display and Information System, is a sophisticated navigational tool that replaces traditional paper charts with digital ones. ECDIS not only displays the charts but also provides additional navigational information, such as depth soundings and navigational warnings. For example, a captain might use ECDIS to navigate through the busy waters of the English Channel. The system would display the electronic charts, as well as real-time data on water depth, weather conditions, and any navigational hazards. This information would help the captain make informed decisions and safely navigate through the complex waters of the English Channel.
