Nautical Term: Expansion joint
Definition of Expansion joint
An expansion joint is a specific type of joint in nautical terminology. It is designed to allow for linear movement, enabling the joint to expand and contract as a result of temperature changes. For instance, in a multi-sectioned ship’s hull, expansion joints would be placed in between each section to prevent the hull from cracking or buckling due to thermal expansion and contraction.
