Nautical Term: Fidley deck
Definition of Fidley deck
The fidley deck is a section of a ship’s deck that is partially raised above the usual deck level. This raised area is commonly situated over the engine and boiler rooms, usually around the smokestack. For instance, during engine room inspections, the fidley deck provides access to the engine and boiler rooms without having to descend into the cramped and humid engine room area.
