Definition of FIT

The nautical term Free in Trimmed (FIT) refers to a condition of a ship when it is not making way against a wind or current but is maintaining its position and is neither drifting nor heeling excessively. For instance, a captain might say, We need to keep our ship free in trimmed while we wait for the tide to turn.
