Nautical Term: Freeboard deck
Definition of Freeboard deck
The Freeboard Deck is the uppermost complete weather-decks on a vessel, which is fully exposed to the elements, both in terms of weather and sea conditions. This deck has permanent means of weathertight closing of all openings in the exposed part. Additionally, below this deck, all openings in the vessel’s sides are fitted with permanent means of watertight closing.
For example, while constructing a large commercial cargo vessel, the builders must ensure that the Freeboard Deck is constructed to the highest standards of weathertightness and watertightness. Once this deck is in place, all openings in the vessel’s sides, below the Freeboard Deck, must be fitted with permanent means of watertight closing to ensure the vessel’s structural integrity and seaworthiness.
