Nautical Term: Poppets

Definition of Poppets

Poppets refer to the vertical timber pieces that are secured between a ship’s bottom and the bilgeways, located at the foremost and aftermost parts of the ship. These poppets provide essential support to the ship as it is launched.

For instance, During the construction of the majestic vessel, the shipbuilders fixed several poppets along the ship’s hull. Once the ship was ready to be launched, the crew members carefully removed the supporting shores and keels. As the ship gradually began to float, the poppets continued to provide essential support, preventing the ship from tilting or listing heavily as it adjusted to the water.
