Nautical Term: MCA

Definition of MCA

The Maritime Coastguard Agency (MCA), which is based in the United Kingdom, is the designated authority responsible for enforcing maritime safety regulations within the territorial waters of the UK. For instance, during a fishing expedition in the North Sea, a fishing trawler encounters a navigational hazard, such as an unmarked underwater rock. In such a situation, the fishing trawler’s crew should immediately contact the MCA by dialing the emergency hotline number +44 (0)2393 2311. The MCA’s coastguard team will then assess the situation and provide guidance and instructions to the fishing trawler’s crew to help ensure their safety and prevent any further damage to the fishing trawler or the marine environment.
