Nautical Term: Graving docks
Definition of Graving docks
A graving dock is a type of dry dock where a vessel is floated in and the entrance is sealed with gates when the tide is at ebb. The remaining water is then pumped out, and the vessel’s bottom is graved, or cleaned, leaving it smooth and free of damage. For instance, a large container ship may enter a graving dock for routine maintenance and cleaning of its bottom.
