Definition of Gripe
The gripe refers to the sharp, forward end of the dished keel. This keel is the weighted underbody of a boat, and the stem is the forwardmost vertical part of the hull. The gripe is where the stem is fixed to the keel.
Example paragraph: During the routine inspection of the Herald, a 30-foot schooner, the captain discovered a problem with the gripe. The stem, which was supposed to be securely fastened to the keel, had become loose. This could have serious consequences, as the stability of the boat could be affected. The captain immediately ordered the crew to secure the stem to the keel using heavy-duty fasteners. Once the repairs were completed, the Herald was once again seaworthy and ready to continue its voyages.
