Nautical Term: PARS
Definition of PARS
The ‘Piracy Attack Risk Surface’ (PARS) represents the risk assessment for piracy attacks on a given surface. It is a tool used by naval forces, shipping companies, and maritime security organizations to assess the piracy risk in a specific area and determine the appropriate countermeasures to reduce the risk of piracy attacks.
For example: According to the latest PARS data, the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea remain high-risk areas for piracy attacks. Maritime security organizations are therefore recommending that vessels transit these areas at speeds above 15 knots, maintain a good lookout, and implement additional security measures such as armed guards or barbed wire.
