Nautical Term: Gear
Definition of Gear
The term ‘gear’ refers to a collection of ropes, cables, chains, blocks and tackles, pulleys, sheaves, winches, drills, gears, and other tools and equipment (things).
For instance, imagine a sailor preparing for a voyage. He ensures that the ‘gear’ on his boat is in good condition. This includes inspecting and replacing worn-out ropes, blocks, and tackles. By ensuring that all the ‘gear’ on his boat is in good working order, the sailor is better prepared for the challenges of a long voyage at sea.
