Definition of Gunwale (gunnel)

The gunwale, also known as the gunnel, is the vertical structural component that marks the boundary between a watercraft’s main deck and its side. For instance, when loading cargo onto a ship, crew members may carefully place the items over the main deck and then slide them down to rest against the gunwale.
