Nautical Term: HA
Definition of HA
A hatch refers to a watertight opening in a ship’s side or deck. Hatches are used to provide access to various parts of the ship, such as the cargo hold or engine room.
For instance, during a cargo loading operation, sailors may need to access the ship’s cargo hold. To do this, they would open the appropriate watertight hatch, ensuring that no water enters the ship as the hatch is opened. Once inside the cargo hold, the sailors can then begin the process of loading the cargo onto the ship.
