Nautical Term: Hawse pipe
Definition of Hawse pipe
The hawse pipe is a significant steel component onboard a ship. It functions as a pipe duct through which the anchor cable is led, safely and efficiently, over the side of the vessel for deployment.
For example, during a routine anchor deployment, the sailor secures one end of the anchor cable to the ship’s anchor windlass. The other end of the cable is led through the hawse pipe, over the ship’s railing, and into the water for the anchor to engage the seabed.
