Nautical Term: NESTING

Definition of NESTING

The term ‘nesting’ refers to the arrangement of cargo on a ship, where similar-shaped cargo is stacked in the contour of the adjacent cargo. This stacking pattern can be likened to a neat stack of plates, ensuring maximum efficiency in the utilization of the ship’s cargo space.

For example, in a single cargo hold on a cargo ship, there might be several thousand units of identical-sized banana boxes. In such a scenario, the efficient use of the cargo hold space can be achieved by adopting the ‘nesting’ principle, where similar-shaped cargo boxes are stacked in the contour of the adjacent boxes, thus maximizing the utilization of the cargo hold space.
