Nautical Term: Snub

Definition of Snub

To abruptly bring a rope or line under control, typically by pulling it against a fixed object. For example, during anchor handling operations, the anchor line needs to be securely held in place to prevent the anchor from dragging. To achieve this, the deckhand will snub the anchor line against the windlass or a sturdy bollard.
