Nautical Term: HCFC

Definition of HCFC

Hydro Chloro Fluoro Carbons, often abbreviated as HCFCs, are a type of refrigerant that contain hydrogen, chlorine, fluorine, and carbon atoms. They were introduced as a replacement for ozone-depleting refrigerants, such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs).

For instance, in the 1990s, many refrigeration systems were converted from CFCs to HCFCs to minimize their impact on the ozone layer. However, it’s important to note that HCFCs still contribute to global warming, making it essential to continue exploring and transitioning to alternative, eco-friendly refrigerants, such as hydrofluoroolefins (HFOs).
