Definition of Overhang

Overhang refers to the horizontal distance that the extremity of a boat’s hull extends beyond the vertical plane of the waterline. For instance, in the following sentence, the overhang of the ship’s bow is described: Despite the large overhang of the bow, the ship smoothly cut through the choppy waters.
