Nautical Term: Counter
Definition of Counter
The counter is the section of a ship’s stern that extends beyond the stern post. This overhanging part adds buoyancy to the stern and helps to counterbalance the weight of the sails and cargo located forward of the mast.
For instance, imagine a tall ship loaded with cargo. The weight of the cargo pulls the ship forward, causing the stern to lift out of the water. In order to counteract this effect and keep the ship stable, the counter provides additional buoyancy to the stern.
