Definition of Longitudinal

A line or element running in the fore and aft direction, parallel to the centreline of a vessel. This term also applies to longitudinal stiffeners or longitudinal members running parallel (or nearly parallel) to the centreline. For instance, a ship’s hull might have several longitudinal frames or stringers to support the hull in the longitudinal direction.
