Nautical Term: Stern post

Definition of Stern post

A stern post refers to the structural element located at the stern of a boat. This post serves as the attachment point for the rudder, which is hinged to the after post. The rudder is then placed on a skeg, allowing for sufficient clearance between the propeller and the rudder.

For example, during a sailing race, the captain may need to make a quick turn to avoid colliding with another boat. In this situation, the captain would use the rudder, which is hinged to the stern post, to make the turn.
