Definition of Pay

Pay refers to the process of filling the seams of a vessel with pitch to ensure watertight integrity. For instance, during a routine maintenance check, the ship’s carpenter notices a small leak emanating from one of the seams. To remedy the situation, the carpenter proceeds to pay the affected seam by carefully applying pitch to fill the seams and prevent further water intrusion.
