Nautical Term: Paying
Definition of Paying
Paying out is the process of gradually releasing tension on a rope or chain. This operation can also be applied to filling seams between planks after caulking. To accomplish this task, melted pitch or marine glue is used to fill the seams effectively.
For instance, while sailing through rough waters, the rope securing the anchor to the ship starts to fray. To address this issue, the sailor will pay out new rope to replace the damaged section, ensuring the anchor remains securely attached to the ship.
