Definition of Pilot rudder

The pilot rudder is an additional small rudder affixed to the after end of the main rudder. It operates mechanically by pulling the main rudder to either side. For instance, in rough sea conditions, the captain may issue the command to put out the pilot to maneuver the ship more effectively and maintain its course.
