Definition of Jacob’s ladder
A vertical rope ladder with rungs securely knotted in place, used for boarding or embarking/disembarking from a vessel over the side.
For instance, during a rescue operation, the rescue team aboard a larger vessel would lower a Jacob’s ladder to the distressed vessel or swimmers. Once aboard, individuals can safely climb the ladder back to the larger vessel.
