Definition of Port lid

A port lid is a specialized shutter designed to securely close a port hole during inclement weather such as storms. This lid is typically hung using top hinges for ease of use. For instance, during a violent storm at sea, the crew would quickly close the port holes with their respective port lids to protect the ship from the destructive force of the wind and waves.
