Nautical Term: Weathertight

Definition of Weathertight

Weathertight refers to the ability of a vessel or structure to effectively keep out water in all wind and wave conditions, up to those considered critical design conditions.

For instance, during a sailing competition, the race officials may declare that the yachts must remain weathertight at all times during the race. This means that the yachts must not allow any water to enter through any means, including the hull, deck, hatches, or windows, in any wind or wave conditions encountered during the race.
