Nautical Term: Cant body
Definition of Cant body
The cant body of a ship refers to that part of the hull, either forward or aft, where the planes of the frames are not perpendicular to the ship’s centerline.
For example, during a sailing race, a yacht may encounter strong winds causing its sails to fill unevenly. The resulting force could cause the yacht’s frames to warp, causing the cant body. The yacht’s crew would then need to adjust the sails and trim the hull to minimize the cant body and restore the yacht’s stability and speed.
