Definition of Quadrant

A quadrant is a nautical instrument, shaped like a quarter of a circle, which is horizontally mounted on top of a rudder stock. Steering cables or chains are attached to this quadrant assembly in vintage vessels or small craft. For example, The old sailing vessel was steered by a quadrant assembly mounted on top of the rudder stock. The steering cables were attached to this assembly, allowing the captain to navigate the vessel through the choppy waters.
