Nautical Term: Malacca-max
Definition of Malacca-max
The term Malacca-max refers to the maximum size of container and bulk vessels, in terms of draught, that can navigate through the Malacca Straits. This limitation is a significant factor in determining the size of future container vessels, which is currently estimated to be around 18,000 TEU.
For example, in a shipping company’s business plan, they may state their intention to build a new container vessel with a capacity of 20,000 TEU. However, upon considering the Malacca-max limitation, the company may decide to reduce the vessel’s capacity to 18,000 TEU in order to ensure that the vessel can navigate through the Malacca Straits.
